This could be really dangerous because it can cause damage to the ilium, the lining that protects the esophagus. There is a muscular valve present in the lower sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus, that opens up to allow food to pass into the stomach and normally closes to prevent food and stomach juices from flowing back into the esophagus, acid reflux or gerd happens when this valve is not tightly close or opens up too far which results in all the stomach acid moves into the esophagus and that causes the burning sensation in the chest, bloating, burping, sore throat in the mouth, nausea after eating. In addition to that if you have gerd then along with these symptoms you may also experience chest pain, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness ,dry cough and a feeling like having a lump in the throat. If you are experiencing these symptoms do not leave it untreated and talk to your doctor about possible diagnosis and treatment. Along with treatment life style changes also plays an important part in reducing the symptoms and treating the disease. Most importantly food plays a role, there are certain foods to avoid with gerd to combat the problem of gerd and acid reflux both.

Gerd foods to avoid

Most gastro esophageal disease sufferers struggle upon this question “which foods should I avoid and which foods should I include”. In order to promote healthy nutrition, there are certain foods that you should avoid or at least reduce the intake of and certain foods that you should include to confer significant long term health benefits and treating your existing medical condition. Some of the foods you should avoid are:

  • High-fat foods

High fat foods are among the biggest culprits behind gerd symptoms. These foods take longer to digest and are not easily eliminated from the body which increases the chance of acid to splash up into the eosophegus.Omega-3 fatty acids and fish oils are the exceptions as there are powerful anti-inflammatory agents present in them.

  • Acidic fruits

Acidic foods like tomatoes, grapefruit, lemons, limes, pineapple and oranges should also be avoided or reduced if you are fighting with acid reflux or gerd disease. These foods lead to the opening of the esophageal sphincter thus increasing acid to flow into the esophagus which leads to acid reflux and gerd.

  • Chocolate

Chocolate contain a great amount of caffeine and fat which may increase the symptoms of gerd and worsen the digestion. Theobromine, a stimulant found in chocolate is responsible for triggering reflux. People suffering from acid reflux and gerd should avoid consuming chocolate but if you are a chocoholic go for the dark organic varieties and only 2-3 small pieces twice a week, not more than that.
