Gastro esophageal reflux disease or commonly known as GERD is chronic more severe form of acid reflux. High fat foods are among the biggest culprits behind gerd symptoms. These foods take longer to digest and are not easily eliminated from the body which increases the chance of acid to splash up into the eosophegus.Omega-3 fatty acids and fish oils are the exceptions as there are powerful anti-inflammatory agents present in them.
Acidic foods like tomatoes, grapefruit, lemons, limes, pineapple and oranges should also be avoided or reduced if you are fighting with acid reflux or gerd disease. These foods lead to the opening of the esophageal sphincter thus increasing acid to flow into the esophagus which leads to acid reflux and gerd.
Chocolate contain a great amount of caffeine and fat which may increase the symptoms of gerd and worsen the digestion. Theobromine, a stimulant found in chocolate is responsible for triggering reflux. People suffering from acid reflux and gerd should avoid consuming chocolate but if you are a chocoholic go for the dark organic varieties and only 2-3 small pieces twice a week, not more than that.
