Change in stomach temperature, such as eating or drinking something very cold followed by something hot can also cause hiccups.

How long do hiccups last?

This irritating condition usually last within a few minutes and rarely, to a few hours. But there are situations where the hiccups last longer than 48 hours, a condition known as persistent hiccups. Another more severe form of hiccups called intractable hiccups last longer than a month, and in rare situations could even lead to insomnia, exhaustion, and weight loss. Both these conditions may be a sign of some serious health problem, therefore must be checked by a doctor.

Sip Cold water

Cold water is an effective home remedy to get rid of hiccups. Drinking cold water works by causing distraction to the system which stops hiccups.

  • A glass of cold water

Hold the glass of water in your hand. Firmly press your nose with the other hand and drink water in this position. Your hiccups would also end by the time you finish water.

Drink from wrong side of the glass

Drinking water from the wrong side of the glass with bending a bit down is an effective way to stop the bouts of hiccups quickly.

Hold glass in your hand and bend a bit. Now drink water from the wrong side of the glass without stopping until the glass is empty.

Put a spoon of sugar in your mouth. Wait for few seconds for the sugar to dissolve in your mouth. Drink a glass of cold water afterwards.
