How To Get Rid Of Poison Ivy, Naturally?

Tea tree

 Tea tree oil, extracted from the Melaleuca Alternifolia plant, is known for its potent antiseptic, antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal properties which make it a great oil to help battle the rash of a poison ivy.

You will need

  • Tea tree oil 3-5 drops
  • Olive oil/coconut oil 1/4cup

Combine tea tree oil with olive oil or coconut oil. Mix thoroughly. Apply the mixture to the itchy area. Repeat twice or three times a day.


Calendula (calendula officinalis) is a wonderful healer along with its anti-inflammatory, antiviral and immune stimulating properties which soothes the affected skin tissues and vanish pain, itch and discomfort of a poison ivy rash.

You will need

  • Calendula cream

Apply calendula cream to the itchy skin twice or three times a day.

Neem leaves

Neem, also known as Azadirachta Indica, is used for centuries for its powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties. The Neem leaves are tremendously good for treating all kinds of skin conditions including poison ivy rash. Neem helps soothe the inflammation, reduces the pain, disinfect the area, which promotes fast healing.

You will need

  • Neem leaves
  • Water

Wash the leaves to remove any dirt and impurities. Blend the leaves with enough water to make a smooth thick paste. Apply this paste to the affected area and leave it for at least 20 minutes.

Goldenseal has great detoxifying properties which boost the immune system stronger, and fight infections. Goldenseal can be taken orally by mouth and also used externally to nix rash and itchiness.

For goldenseal tea

You will need

  • Goldenseal dried powder 1 teaspoon
  • Water 2 cups

To prepare goldenseal tea, pour two cups of hot steaming water over a teaspoon of the dried powdered goldenseal root. Let it steep for about 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink a cup once a day and use no more than a week. You can add a tablespoon of honey as goldenseal is very bitter.

For external application

You will need

  • Goldenseal dried powder 1 teaspoon
  • Water 1 teaspoon

Combine goldenseal powder and water to make a smooth paste. Apply the paste on the itchy skin and leave it for 15-20 minutes. Wash thoroughly with water afterward.

Tips to prevent poison ivy

  • Identify the troublesome plants that cause poison ivy and other related allergies to avoid contact and getting the unbearable rash.
  • When hiking, or enjoying nature, stay on cleared pathways to avoid contact with the poisonous plants.
  • When enjoying nature or mowing garden wear protective clothes to cover the skin as much as possible.
  • Do not let your pets in the woody area as they can get the oily resin with them.
  • Once you get exposed to these plants, only prompt action could save you. Wash the area with cold water as soon as possible.
  • It is also important to change the clothing which comes in contact to avoid poison ivy. Remember the poisonous resin remain in clothing for a much extended period, almost years. Therefore, it is important to wash all such clothing with a good detergent to extract out the resin.
